Actuary
Graham Collett is an Actuary and has worked for a number of established international Financial organsiations. We asked him to tell us about his career to date and his keys to success.
Day-to-day
Tell us about the daily duties of an Actuary?
Actuarial duties can vary widely between different roles but focus on the areas of Financial Management and Reporting and managing of Financial risks. My role is varied but focuses on the reporting of company performance against set Financial targets.
Academics and study
How important was your academic qualification in getting your first job?
My Maths degree was really important in getting my first role as an Actuarial Trainee. To become an Actuary, you have to have a specific type of degree.
How long does it take to qualify as an Actuary and what difference does possessing a qualification make to your role/salary etc?
On average, it takes around 5-6 years to qualify as an Actuary but it can easily take longer. Qualification always brings benefits both in terms of role and salary but these also improve gradually whilst you work towards qualification.
As we speak
What's the best thing about your current role?
I enjoy the fact that I work for a progressive company that has a good reputation in the industry. In some ways I've been able to reach a "comfort zone" where I understand how the company works and have good relationships with the people I work with.
When was the last time you felt daunted by something you had to do at work?
I found presenting regular reports to Senior Management daunting at first. But once you have done something a few times, it becomes easier.
How do you wind down and get work out of your system? Do you keep a good balance between your job and life outside work?
I play a lot of sport and keep fit generally. I really like my cricket and am in training for the London Marathon - it's a good contrast to sitting and looking at a computer screen all day! Sometimes in the past, work has taken over too much of my life, but as long as this does not became a permanent situation I don't mind.
Ever made a mistake that was hard to live down?
I miscalculated some monthly sales figures - they ended up with an extra zero on the end. Everyone got really excited. Briefly. Whoops!
Tips from the top
Can you offer any advice to someone looking to start out in Finance?
Becoming an Actuary involves a lot of hard work and self-study. Personal skills are key in determining success in every field and Finance is no different. Improving my communication, leadership and management skills has been (and will be) most important in my own career progression.
