GAAPweb training partner Home Learning College today releases important news for anyone interested in pursuing a career as an Accounting Technician.

Results released by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) show that 86% of people studying a Level 2 or 3 AAT qualification via distance learning with Home Learning College passed their exams in December 2009. This is 6% higher than the UK average and 15% higher than the global average.

Building on this success, Home Learning College this month introduces the AAT Level 4 Diploma, which represents the final step in gaining full Accounting Technician status. The AAT Level 4 Diploma is open to students who have completed the AAT Level 3 Diploma or who have an accounting related degree and wish to obtain a professional qualification. The term Accounting Technician covers a huge variety of accounting jobs - from administration to head of finance - in areas such as forensic accounting, corporate finance, tax, insolvency and more.

The qualification is approximately equivalent to the first year of an honours degree and secures entry into one of the chartered accountancy bodies such as Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

AAT Level 4 comprises four core units covering financial accounting, drafting financial statements, professional ethics (also available as part of Level 3) and management accounting. Students must then choose two out of three specialist units - implementing auditing procedures, preparing business tax computations and preparing personal tax computations - allowing them to focus on the areas of greatest professional interest.

Each unit will be available as a separate module through Home Learning College, with the first three core elements launching this month. The remaining modules will be brought on board throughout the first half of 2010, with all units available later in the year. This modular approach allows students to pick and choose in which order they complete the various units, according to their personal preference.

Home Learning College has been a key AAT training partner for three years, achieving better than average results in each exam sitting. There are three moderated exams within the Level 2 and 3 AAT Diploma pathway, covering Units 5, 6 and 30. Home Learning College students outperformed their peers across all units, with a variance ranging from 5% to 22% - see table below for further details:

HLC AAT average Variance
Unit 5 90.3% 68.5% 21.8%
Unit 6 82.0% 63.2% 18.8%
Unit 30 85.4% 80.4% 5.0%
Average 85.9% 70.7% 15.2%

Dave Snow, Academic Director at Home Learning College, added: “Over the past three years we have helped hundreds of students to successfully pass the earlier AAT Levels, achieving pass rates that match or often exceed the national average. With this final level in place, people can now take advantage of our highly successful distance learning model to progress to full Accounting Technician status, allowing them to combine study with existing work and social commitments.”
